What is a dental implant?

A natural tooth consists of a root inside the jawbone and a visible crown above the jawbone. Dental implants, made of medical-grade titanium, replace the roots of missing teeth. Similar to your natural tooth root, dental implants act as an anchor for a replacement tooth or crown. Titanium implants are biocompatible and exceptionally stable, with a proven 95% success rate in implant procedures.

HOW IT IS PERFORMED

THE TRATMENT INCLUDES 2 PHASES:

1. SURGICAL PHASE

Whereby the implant is inserted into the bone.

2. REHABILITATION PHASE

Restoring the tooth using a structure connected to the implant and a crown with the appearance and function of a natural tooth.

If You Have One Tooth Missing

A single tooth is replaced using an implant in place of the natural root. A crown, or replacement tooth, is attached to the implant with an abutment. The surrounding teeth are not affected. 

If You Have Several Teeth Missing

Multiple teeth are replaced with an implant-supported bridge. Implants are placed in the area where the teeth are missing. The implants are connected with a dental bridge that consists of a crown for each implant and a false tooth, called a pontic, that fills the space between the crowns.

If You Are Missing All of Your Teeth

A complete set of teeth is replaced with a fixed or removable denture that is attached to multiple implants. An implant-supported denture is more comfortable and stable than a traditional denture and bone is better preserved.

If You Have a Removable Denture

A complete or partial denture is supported by two or more implants for improved stability and retention. Insertion of the implants for denture stability contributes to improving comfort, function and overall stability of the removable denture.

5 IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS

A dental implant procedure performed as soon as possible after the loss of natural teeth, prevents bone resorption, and helps maintain a young-looking face. Clinical studies show that dental implants inhibit and even fully stop bone resorption. Following a tooth extraction, the bone loses 2mm of its height during the first two months, and an additional 2mm by the end of the first year. Since bone loss begins immediately after tooth extraction, it’s important to perform the implant placement either on the day of extraction or soon after healing of the extraction site. If too much bone at the extraction site resorbs before placing an implant, the implant procedure and rehabilitation process may be more complex.

This type of treatment is referred to as an immediate implant placement procedure, as the implant is immediately placed after tooth extraction. This procedure enables shortening of the healing process, as there is healing of the extraction site and implant absorption at the same time. Your dentist will let you know if you’re a candidate for an immediate implantation treatment program. Success rates of immediate implantation are identical to those of standard implantations.

This procedure is referred to as an immediate loading or restoration technique. It’s a method whereby an immediate restoration is built onto the implants on the same day of performing the implantation. This restoration allows the patient to leave the clinic with new teeth and a new smile on the very day of implantation. This method provides an immediate solution to aesthetic problems in the frontal area. It may not be suitable for all cases and your dentist will let you know if this is a treatment option for you.

Lack of bone may result from various factors, such as gum disease, bone resorption, congenital lack of teeth, bone loss following a traumatic extraction, and other reasons. Bone augmentation is intended to thicken the jawbone to enable a successful implantation procedure. The bone augmentation process is common, and today, there are several methods that enable dentists to perform bone width augmentation with proven efficiency. Dentists use bone replacements in the process which serve as a foundation for natural bone construction. In some cases, implantations can be performed in the same procedure as bone grafting. There may be a long recovery period lasting 4-6 months, until the desired bone thickness is obtained, only after which, the implants are inserted.

If you do not have sufficient bone height in the upper jaw, or your sinuses are too close to the jaw, your dentist may recommend a sinus lift. This procedure may be necessary when replacing a molar or premolar in the upper jaw, as it’s located directly below the sinus, a hollow space. The procedure involves removing the lower part of the sinus from the area in which the implants are placed and creating an adequate bone height required for implant insertion.
